Using the SIT

The SIT helps inform decision-making for existing buildings and heritage sites by considering the Economic, Cultural, Environmental and Social outcomes of potential action across a range of categories.

The categories within the SIT have been chosen to align with national outcomes for Scotland, and key government priorities. So, for example, using the tool can help to clarify where to target applications for external funding.

The SIT is flexible and can demonstrate benefits for those considering single small-scale projects, or national organisations with multiple assets.

The first stage is to gather information, and complete your project sheet in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders. This will help to identify whether your project has High, Medium or Low values across each of the 15 categories.

By transferring your assessment to the various categories on the wheel, you create a visual representation that is unique to your project.

The SIT is not intended to be a definitive solution to prioritisation and investment decisions. However, the structure it provides can aid communication of the value that existing buildings, heritage assets and the related projects, can bring across a wide range of indicators, ultimately broadening the understanding of heritage value.

The Using the SIT pack has much more information and takes you through the process step by step.
